How We Work With You

You can instruct members of chambers by or through English solicitors, in-house lawyers and overseas lawyers. In appropriate cases, we are also able to receive instructions directly from non-lawyers and some members are authorised to accept Direct Access instructions.  For more information about Direct Access instructions, please see the Public Access Guidance for Lay Clients provided by the Bar Standards Board.

The Clerks are happy to provide a fee quote on request. Fees and timescales depend on the nature of the work required and will range from fixed fees for specific pieces of work to an agreed upon hourly rate where flexibility is required. When a fee quote is provided it will specify whether VAT is applicable as well as the relevant timescale for completion of the instruction.

Various factors will influence the timescales in which a barrister can complete a piece of work such as availability; the amount of papers to be reviewed; the complexity of the case; the need for any additional information or documents; the approach taken by the other side; whether any third parties intervene in the case; and court waiting times.

The terms on which members of Chambers offer their services, in the absence of express agreement to the contrary, are set out in The Standard Contractual Terms For The Supply Of Legal Services By Barristers To Authorised Persons 2012 (updated for the GDPR in 2018) – Annex T to The Code of Conduct. Members of Chambers have professional liability insurance provided by the Bar Mutual Fund Limited. The minimum cover which barristers must have is £500,000. At 1 Chancery Lane we are known for our commitment to delivering the very highest standards of client care. We work hard towards our overarching objective of making each client feel that they are our most important client.

As part of this we understand that you need an efficient, professional service at all times – covering not only the preparation and presentation of your case but also the associated system for bookings, fee negotiation and billing.

In addition to conducting regular client care reviews and meetings we also conduct an annual client survey. This offers an opportunity to share feedback and ideas for how we might do our jobs even better. The headline findings of this survey, as well as suggestions, are then published to demonstrate our commitment to client care.
